Umbra was created by the Great Beings and placed within the Matoran Universe before its launch. He was the first being tasked with guarding the Mask of Life, and was placed at the bottom of the 777 steps to guard the Kanohi Ignika's chamber.

Eventually Axonn and Brutaka were also tasked with guarding the Mask of Life by the Order of Mata Nui. Since their goals were aligned, Umbra agreed to join the Order of Mata Nui as a servant.

Umbra has stood as the final Guardian of the Mask of Life for all of history, having challenged both Jovan's Toa Team and the Toa Inika to prove their worthiness. 

When Makuta Teridax was defeated and Spherus Magna was reformed, the Order of Mata Nui recovered the Kanohi Ignika with Mata Nui's spirit lying dormant within, and tasked Umbra with guarding it once more.

Abilities & Tools

Umbra wields a variety of Light powers, such as transforming himself into a beam of light. He can also form Rhotuka spinners that create hard light projections. Like a Toa of Light, he can bend light around his body to change the way the color of his armor is perceived. While he can do some things that Toa of Light cannot, his powers aren't on the same level as a Toa.

Umbra does not need food, sleep, heat or air to survive.

Umbra wears a powerless Kanohi Ruru. He is unable to use Kanohi.

Umbra carries a Laser Lance that fires lasers and features a Rhotuka Launcher. Umbra also has skates on his feet that let him travel at high speeds. These wheels allow Umbra to travel on walls and ceilings.

Personality

Umbra is very cold and completely dedicated to his job. The morals of whoever seeks the Ignika doesn't matter to him - all must prove their worth by defeating him. He does not consider his work a matter of pleasure. Should anyone challenge him for the Mask of Life, he will not stop attacking until he is knocked out. He sees the trial as a means of proving one's honor.
