Matoran Universe Locations

The Matoran Universe is the body of the Great Spirit Mata Nui. This 40-million foot tall automata is filled with dozens of interconnected biospheres, each containing one or more artificial islands simulating a natural environment with daylight cycles and artificial gravity. Few that inhabit the Matoran Universe were aware of this fact before migrating to Spherus Magna. Though there are some exceptions, everything that is within and part of the Matoran Universe is composed of a form of Protodermis.

Artakha (Island)

Also called the Great Refuge, Artakha is an island realm governed by the being Artakha, after whom it was named. It is home to the universe's best Matoran crafters and the location where many valuable artifacts are made.

Artakha is a land of advanced technology, filled with modern cities. Many other cities, such as Metru Nui, were based on Artakha's design. In the center of the island is an enormous sculpture of a Kanohi Hau. The rest of the geography is always changing, as its ruler is able to change it to look however he pleased, along with the island's climate, by using a mechanism on the island.

Artakha himself resides in a fortress in the center of the island. The fortress is also able to change its appearance to suit its owner's fancy.

Artidax

An island that is part of the western chain of the Southern Islands. It functioned as the secret prison for Makuta Miserix for thousands of years.

Artidax is an island far to the south of the Matoran Universe that seems to always be surrounded by shadows, with strange Rahi flying overhead. The island is covered in black sand that comes to life and swallows any Makuta who try and walk across the island.

Daxia

The secret island base of the Order of Mata Nui

Daxia has a very harsh climate; the island is blisteringly hot, and has no obvious source of water. However, Daxia has many tiny streams flowing down its mountains which indicated underground lakes, and the high temperatures created flora unique to Daxia. The island is also home to an active volcano.

The Order's headquarters is a heavily guarded fortress on the northernmost point of the island. It contains a Power Cradle Chamber, Suva Chamber, training grounds, dormitories, prisons, a massive library of tablets, an underwater airship hangar, a firing range, and an armory, along with a plethora of other rooms. There is also an operations center where Helryx would plan located in the center of the fortress. The fortress is equipped with the latest technology and weapons and has a self-destruct mechanism in place if the island were to be discovered.

Later, the island would be modified to be capable of teleportation, which was reverse engineered from Destral's similar teleportation system.

Destral

Destral is the island headquarters of the infamous Brotherhood of Makuta.

An enormous fortress is located on Destral which contains workshops, laboratories, armories, prison cells, interrogation chambers, living quarters for the Makuta, and a library of forbidden knowledge. It also contains a large amount of Energized Protodermis for the Brotherhood's various experiments. The fortress itself is huge, covering most of the island, except a portion of the southern tip.

Island of the Lotus Clan

An unnamed, secluded island to the north of Metru Nui which isn't present on any charts or maps, and is completely isolated and foreign to the majority of the Matoran Universe. The island is surrounded in a dense fog, and is nearly impossible to locate without prior knowledge of its existence.

This island is inhabited by a village of Toa and Matoran known as the Lotus Clan. The Lotus Clan hava a very spiritual culture, resulting in a much more powerful breed of Toa. Their isolation led them to pursue a peaceful existence, living solely off the land in balance with nature. This island was the original home of Konpaku and Kojiro.

Karda Nui

Karda Nui, also known as the Core of the Universe or the "World that Feeds the World," is the power source for the Matoran Universe, providing all its light and energy. The energy produced is sent to Metru Nui where it is redistributed to other areas of the universe. This energy is vital to the universe - if the flow stops, the health of the Great Spirit Robot will begin to deteriorate. If all the light in Karda Nui were ever drained, the universe would be plunged into eternal darkness.

Karda Nui is a massive domed cavern, and the only structure present in the entire area is the Codrex. Fierce storms of energy will rage within the chamber while the Great Spirit is active. The cave walls surrounding Karda Nui are virtually impervious, though the western wall contains a portal to enter and exit the region. Powerful shields surround Karda Nui which are meant to keep the Energy Storms from escaping and destroying anything outside of it. Once the Energy Storms dissipated due to the Great Spirit's weakening, the floor was covered in sand, and the environment was livable.

After the Great Cataclysm, the severe structural damage to the Matoran Universe drastically altered the landscape of Karda Nui. Several massive stalactites fell from the ceiling of the cave, and the Av-Matoran created villages on top of them. The dome filled with a thick mist, and a hole opened in the ceiling where Voya Nui used to be, creating a Giant Waterfall and causing the floor to became a swamp with Pit Mutagen in it. This swamp section is known as the Swamp of Secrets.

Karzahni (Island)

Karzahni is a realm in the Matoran Universe ruled by the tyrant being Karzahni, after whom it was named. Gali Nuva later destroyed this island using a Water Nova Blast.

The realm itself is very strange. The ground screams at every step, volcanoes spew burning ice, and waterfalls are made out of dust. If a Matoran were to sit down, the rock upon which the Matoran sat would turn the Matoran into a statue.

A short peninsula juts north from Karzahni forming a land bridge dotted with mountain ranges, a large stone gateway, and the Tunnel of Darkness. The stone gateway includes a barrier, raised by the Order of Mata Nui, that barrs beings bearing the elemental power of Light. On the spit of land at the far end of the land bridge is an entrance to an underwater chute to Metru Nui.

Mars' Island

A small, unnamed island among the southernmost Southern Islands. Originally uninhabited, it became the original home of Mars. The island is unremarkable, only containing a small forest of trees and large mushrooms, and a makeshift hut built by the Ancient Toa of Lightning where he kept all his possessions. The island was originally discovered accidentally by the Dark Hunters, and later discovered again by the Order of Mata Nui on a scouting mission.

Mata Nui (Island)

Mata Nui was a large island on the surface of Aqua Magna, accidentally created by the Great Spirit Mata Nui's camouflage system. It was the home of the Matoran of Metru Nui for over a thousand years following the Great Cataclysm. It has since been destroyed by the re-awakening of Mata Nui.

The island measured 486 kilometers in length and 285 kilometers wide, located in the ocean surface of Aqua Magna. Its shape was based on that of Metru Nui in the dome below; however, it was many times larger so as to successfully cover the face of the Great Spirit Robot beneath it.

Topographically, the island could be divided into thirds radiating out from the Mangai Volcano. To the south, the ground was very flat, whereas the northwestern third was extremely rugged and mountainous, containing many peaks, as well as jagged coastlines and canyons in the far north. The northeastern third was of intermediate terrain, comprised chiefly of the Motara Desert and the basin of Naho Bay. The south and northeast were separated by a large lava flow from the eastern side of the volcano to the sea.

Mata Nui was originally a barren, desertic land, since no one was ever planned to live there. However, Energized Protodermis leaked beneath its surface, and its landscape was greatly changed, with new physiographical features and flora causing the island to develop into six distinct regions, or Wahi, as well as the Kini-Nui located in the center-west of the island. After being leveled by the Bohrok, the island resumed its barren state.

Metru Nui

Metru Nui, also known as the City of Legends, was the most significant location of the Matoran Universe. The island city functioned as the brain of the Great Spirit, and the work of the Matoran there was vital in keeping the universe active. It was highly coveted by several factions, including the Brotherhood of Makuta and the Dark Hunters, because of its strategic significance to the universe as a whole. Metru Nui was the northernmost region of the entire Matoran Universe, being located in the head of the Great Spirit. The name Metru Nui means "Great City" in the Matoran language.

Metru Nui was roughly 65 times smaller than Mata Nui. The design of the city originated from the island of Artakha. The island city was directly below Mata Nui and received light from twin suns, which were the eyes of Mata Nui's body.

The city of Metru Nui was advanced, dotted with Matoran homes and crisscrossed with chutes - the main form of transportation on Metru Nui. The city was divided into six "Metru" and the Coliseum.

Metru Nui was damaged during and after the Great Cataclysm, but was repaired to its former state by the Staff of Artakha and the work of the Matoran.

In preparation for the final battle of the Destiny War, the Order of Mata Nui transformed Metru Nui's landscape into a massive fortress, fortifying the coastline with massive walls with help from the island's Matoran.

Northern Continent

The Northern Continent was the largest northernmost land mass in the Matoran Universe. It was located south of Metru Nui, but north of most other landmasses. The continent contained many Matoran settlements.

Jutting out of the southeast side of the continent was the Tren Krom Peninsula, a hazardous territory. The peninsula featured large cliff faces lined with razor sharp spikes, acid falls, volcanic mountains, and dangerous Rahi. Despite the deadly environment, the peninsula was populated by a number of Matoran settlements, with several different types of Matoran tribes coexisting.

Nynrah

Nynrah is the land of origin of the Nynrah Ghosts. Details about the island's geography are scarce, but there are steep cliffs surrounding the island, with a beach on only one side. The island had a number of villages, one of which was once occupied by the Nynrah Ghosts.

The island was later converted into a Brotherhood of Makuta stronghold, which was subjected to a lengthy siege from the Order of Mata Nui during the Destiny War.

Odina

Odina was the secret island headquarters of the Dark Hunters in the Matoran Universe.

Odina is surrounded by huge cliffs with only a single pathway leading down to Nidhiki Beach - where Nidhiki was originally transformed from a Toa into an insectoid monster by Roodaka. The northern section is barren and undeveloped. There are also snowcapped mountains on the island.

The fortress in which the Dark Hunters reside is massive, covering most of the southern area of the island. The courtyard of the fortress was an arena where active and potential Dark Hunters trained and engaged in combat, often to the death. The fortress itself was heavily guarded by especially powerful Dark Hunters.

The fortress contains the organizations' treasury, as well as numerous passages, traps, dead ends, specialized prisons, and various other rooms and storage areas. The walls, corridors, and rooms of the fortress shifted and changed according to The Shadowed One's thoughts, so that he could herd intruders wherever he wanted. In a tower at the center of the fortress was The Shadowed One's personal chamber, which contained various items such as his throne, trophies, items of power, and Toa Varian held in a Stasis Tube.

Southern Continent

The Southern Continent was the largest island in the Matoran Universe, and was positioned in the centermost dome in the universe. The area also lay on top of the Nui Caves, an extensive network of caverns originally home to Av-Matoran.

Some features of the continent include an uninhabited valley with intelligent grasses, and a lake with at least one Matoran-inhabited island. Near the center of the Southern Continent was a crescent-shaped region known as Voya Nui. Home to the Kanohi Ignika, many of the island's geographic features reflect this, including the Green Belt, a perpetual area of forestation. It was home to a large population of Matoran, who were poorly repaired and sent there by Karzahni. The Matoran created a variety of locations, including a Cavern of Historical Records, as well as a Canyon Fortress and Matoran Stronghold. Other geographical features include a pointed rock feature known as Needle Rock, the Cape of No Hope and the Desert of Sorrows. After the Great Cataclysm, it was separated from the landmass and became its own island on the surface of Aqua Magna.

Voya Nui

After becoming an island, a Ring of Ice accumulated around the island, barring almost any sea access to it. Voya Nui faced many hardships, including droughts and famine. The island was extremely dangerous, as it was often beset by unexpected earthquakes, lightning storms, volcanic eruptions and other dangers such as Rahi. Because of this, the Matoran of Voya Nui all united together in a single village for unity and security. Resources such as water and food were often scarce on the island, forcing the Matoran to scavenge for what they could find.

At the center of Voya Nui is the active volcano Mount Valmai, named after an ancient Matoran term for "cursed place", surrounded by a Lake of Lava.

Below Voya Nui was a pathway created by the Great Beings containing several traps and chambers, all designed to keep the unworthy from possessing the Kanohi Ignika. Beginning at the 777 Stairs carved into Mount Valmai, the path goes through the Zone of Nightmares, the Chamber of Death, past the Lava Chamber Gate and ending in the Chamber of Life, where the Ignika is intended to be housed.

While Voya Nui was an island, the inner area of the crescent became known as Voya Nui Bay. Due to the surrounding ring of ice, the Lagoon Entrance was the only safe way to enter the bay. Lava flowed from Mount Valmai into the bay, eventually forming enough land to colonize. The Matoran built another settlement there, which they called Mahri Nui. However, the unstable ground eventually gave way, causing Mahri Nui to sink.

Mahri Nui

When Mahri Nui broke off from Voya Nui and sank beneath the Ocean of Aqua Magna, it took the Matoran village and hundreds of Matoran down with it. In the process, it smashed into an Airweed field, releasing hundreds of air bubbles that allowed the Matoran to survive long enough to build up a home and resist further mutation by the sea water.

The village of Mahri Nui was situated on top of Mahri Rock, an upside-down mountain of rock that landed directly on top of a Barraki fortress. Features of Mahri Nui included a strong and dangerous undercurrent off the western end of the city, and the Pillars of Salt on the north end of the city. Locations within the city included the Mahri Nui Fortress, various shelters, Hydruka pens, and a school where Matoran were instructed about sea life.

Below the outskirts of Mahri Nui in a crevice in the seafloor sat the remains of the Pit, also known as the Deep Deep or the Black Water, which was a jail used by the Order of Mata Nui to imprison those who were considered irredeemable.

Over time the molten Protodermis from Mount Valmai created a rock formation later referred to as the Cord, which connected Mahri Nui to Voya Nui and acted as an anchor, stopping Voya Nui from its constant drifting on the ocean's surface.

Mahri Nui was later destroyed when Voya Nui returned to its position on the Southern Continent.

Southern Islands

The Southern Islands are two large chains of islands in the southernmost domes of Matoran Universe. Due to the various amounts of islands, the landscape of the chain varies from location to location. They are generally barren, with few amounts of species living on any given island.

Very few of the islands are named. Notable location include Artidax and Mars' Island.

Stelt

Stelt was a large island in the Matoran Universe home to several sapient species. The island was a desolate place, mostly due to the ruling species' envy; whenever one of them managed to build any kind of structure, their neighbors grew jealous and united to tear it down. The only stable structures were coliseums, which the inhabitants used for entertainment, and relatively unimportant dwellings, such as trader's houses or inns.

The island was typically used as the main camp of Parax's trade caravan when they weren't traveling the Matoran Universe.

Visorak (Island)

Visorak was the island home of Tobduk's species, until Makuta Chirox arrived and used the island as a testing ground for newly created Visorak species, destroying the village in which Tobduk resided in the process. The island was subsequently named after the Rahi by the Brotherhood of Makuta. Very little is known about the landscape of Visorak except that it had a village which housed Tobduk and his kin.

Xia

Xia is a heavily industrialized island known for the massive weapons manufacturing industry run by its primary residents, the Vortixx. The residents of Xia keep all of their sea routes available and clear of any obstacles. The island can be reached by sailing out of the southern gate of Metru Nui, then steering east and following the dome's wall.

The largest, most notable feature of Xia is "The Mountain" - originally a small, sentient rock created by Makuta Mutran that he accidentally left behind during a visit to Xia. Over time it grew larger and larger by eating Xians until it reached its current size. Successfully climbing The Mountain would become a rite of passage for the Vortixx.

Xia was a very inhospitable realm. The island is completely environmentally devastated, with every inch of the island not taken up by The Mountain covered in factories, warehouses, docks, and other buildings. There are no houses in Xia - all inhabitants sleep near their posts, in case they are needed for an unexpected order. The only water source is a small, dirty stream that wound around The Mountain and passed through many factories on its course. The pollution is so awful that the only clean air on the island was said to exist at the top of The Mountain.

Due to the pollution caused by heavy industry, only a few species of Rahi managed to survive on Xia. However, two foreign Rahi - the Tahtorak and the Kanohi Dragon - were later transported to the island, and the resulting fight between the two caused roughly half of Xia to be destroyed. This battle would eventually be ended by the reformed Toa Hagah.

Zakaz

Zakaz is the island home of the warlike Skakdi species.

Prior to Makuta Spiriah's experiments on the Skakdi, Zakaz was a land lush with much flora and water. But the resulting Skakdi civil war took its toll, and Zakaz became a barren island with sparse vegetation. Fortresses were built everywhere but were usually destroyed shortly after, leaving behind large amounts of rubble. In the center of the island is a great lake, which is the only location on the island which the Skakdi will not fight over. As it is the only source of water available, it was declared a no-fighting zone.

Non-mobile Nektann defense towers were placed at strategic points all over the island to shoot down any Airships that approached the island. The island is so dangerous, that the Brotherhood of Makuta issued no-travel orders forbidding any approach to Zakaz.

Spherus Magna Locations

Spherus Magna is a planet located in the Solis Magna System. Its core is made of Energized Protodermis, and it was here that the Great Beings oversaw the construction of the Matoran Universe. Long ago, due to conflict over the source of the Protodermis, the planet was shattered into three planetoid fragments: Bara Magna, Aqua Magna, and Bota Magna. Mata Nui's destiny was to repair the fragmented planet - and now that his destiny is complete, the planet has become the new home of the inhabitants of the Matoran Universe.

Black Spike Mountains

The Black Spike Mountains is a mountainous region to the north of Spherus Magna. During the confrontation between Mata Nui and Teridax, the latter fired a laser towards one of the peaks, causing it to melt under the extreme heat. When the Great Spirit Robot fell, it crushed some of the mountains.

The Black Spike Mountains are a desolate and dangerous mountain range on Spherus Magna, formerly ruled by the Element Lord of Rock. After the Shattering, this range became part of the planet of Bara Magna.

Desert of Bara Magna

Bara Magna, also known as the Great Barren, was a giant desert located on Spherus Magna, and had very little natural resources. Following the Shattering, it existed as its own independent planet for 100,000 years until Spherus Magna was reformed. Shortly after, Mata Nui transformed the desert into a lush land covered in flora.

Bara Magna, also known as the Great Barren, is a large desert region. Many Agori and Glatorian resided here, and a large number of them were here when the Shattering occurred. The name Bara Magna then grew to encompass the entire planet, instead of just the desert area. It has since been merged back into Spherus Magna, and much of the desert was made fertile. It was ruled by the Element Lord of Sand during the Element Lords' reign.

Forest of Bota Magna

Bota Magna, or the Great Jungle, is a region of Spherus Magna. The Great Jungle is mostly covered by an expanse of heavily-forested land, which was once ruled by the Element Lord of Jungle. After the Shattering, vegetation stopped growing in some areas, though most of the jungle remained intact. These areas were rendered fertile again by Mata Nui. It is located to the north of Bara Magna.

Bota Magna, also known as the Great Jungle, is a large forest formerly ruled by the Element Lord of Jungle. The Skrall homeland is located in the mountains of the Great Jungle, and was ruled by the Element Lord of Rock. After the Shattering, it became a separate celestial body.

New Atero

After Spherus Magna was reformed, Tahu and Gali started looking for a suitable location for New Atero.

Northern Frost

Although not naturally part of Spherus Magna's Great Forest, much of the Northern Frost region was present on the Bota Magna moon following the Shattering. It has remained a distinct geological region, however.

The Northern Frost is an icy region in the far north of the planet. It was formerly ruled by the Element Lord of Ice. Food has always been hard to come by in this region. The Kanohi Ignika was cooled in one of its icy caverns. After the Shattering, the Northern Frost was included on the new celestial body of Bota Magna. After the planet's reformation, it has returned to being a separate area of Spherus Magna.

Northern Region

The area of Spherus Magna north of the Black Spike and White Quartz Mountain ranges is host to a number of exotic landmarks, including the River Dormus, the Forest of Blades, and the volcanic, unstable territory that the Skrall conquered after the Shattering. Also located in the northern region are: the Great Volcano, former domain of the Element Lord of Fire; the Valley of the Maze, stronghold of the Great Beings; and the spring where Energized Protodermis first surfaced.

Ocean of Aqua Magna

Aqua Magna, or Great Sea, also known as the Endless Ocean by the former inhabitants of Mata Nui, is a giant ocean located on Spherus Magna.

Aqua Magna, also known as the Great Sea, is a large body of water located southwest of Bara Magna. During the reign of the Element Lords, it ruled by the Element Lord of Water. After the Shattering, it eventually developed into a separate celestial body.

Ruins of the Matoran Universe

During Teridax's fight with Mata Nui, Mata Nui pushed Teridax into the path of a fragment of Aqua Magna. The resulting impact destroyed the Core Processor, killing Teridax and heavily damaging Metru Nui. With no being in control, the robot body collapsed onto Bara Magna, causing damage throughout the Matoran Universe in an event comparable to the Great Cataclysm. With the death of the Great Spirit, the heating, lighting, and artificial gravity systems in the robot began to fail. As a result, most beings in the Matoran Universe migrated to the newly reformed Spherus Magna.

The Matoran Universe was eventually taken apart on Bara Magna. Some parts have been used to make shelters and villages

Tomidas' Fortress

An imposing fortress made out of rock and mortar. Before the Shattering, the Great Beings had a base here. The fortress is isolated against seismic shocks and against exterior transmissions, such as those sent by Mata Nui.

Valley of the Maze

The Valley of the Maze, sometimes more simply referred to as the Maze Valley, is the site of an ancient fortress of the Great Beings on Bara Magna.

The Valley of the Maze is nearly featureless, other than the maze itself, which rises from the ground in the visual pattern represented on Saw Blade Shields.

The Great Volcano is an artificial volcano at the center of the maze that serves as a power plant.

White Quartz Mountains

The White Quartz Mountains are made up of frozen crystalline peaks to the north of the Great Barren, and were among the regions ruled by the Element Lord of Rock. In the aftermath of the Shattering, the White Quartz Mountains became a landmark of the planet of Bara Magna.

The White Quartz Mountains are a mountainous region to the northwest of Bara Magna.

The White Quartz Mountains region is a large, geographical zone comprised of tall, snow-covered peaks. The region is rich in Exsidian, a rare metal on Bara Magna.

Luna Magna Locations

Luna Magna is a planet located in an alternate dimension neighboring Spherus Magna's.

Believing their experiments on Spherus Magna to have failed, the Great Beings moved on the Luna Magna to start anew.

Later, Karzahni caused the Dimensional Relocation of Luna Magna, permanently moving the planet into the Prime Universe.

The Red Star

The Red Star is an enigmatic celestial object in the Solis Magna System. Inhabited and run by Kestora, this interstellar space station was created by the Great Beings to assist the Mata Nui robot in taking off from planets. In addition, it helped conserve the robot's finite resources by reviving its inhabitants when they died: The deceased were transported from the Matoran Universe into the Red Star, where they would be placed in a new body and sent back.
