Mata Nui was the Great Spirit whose massive robotic body contained the Matoran Universe. He was betrayed by Makuta Teridax and after being put into a coma for thousands of years, was expelled into space within the Kanohi Ignika, leaving Teridax in control of the reawakened robot. After landing on Bara Magna, he aided its people in their conflict, eventually using a prototype robot to defeat Teridax and restore Spherus Magna.

Mata Nui was the Great Spirit, a powerful sentient construct designed by the Great Beings. His body was an immense robot whose interior housed the Matoran Universe, a complex system of simulated lands and lifeforms that provided essential functions for the robot’s existence. The Great Beings tasked unknowing Matoran with assembling the robot from within, while another created being, Tren Krom, maintained the universe during construction. When Mata Nui was awakened, his spirit was placed in the Core Processor beneath Metru Nui, granting him control of the robot and making him responsible for the light, gravity, and life forces of his universe. His duties included observing other worlds and ultimately healing Spherus Magna after the Core War.
Once active, Mata Nui created many sapient species (such as the Makuta and Vortixx) to populate and maintain his universe. Some members of the Brotherhood of Makuta, while initially peaceful protectors, eventually fostered resentment and jealousy toward him. Over time, this brewing hostility culminated in the coup of the Brotherhood of Makuta led by Makuta Teridax, who went on to attempt to overthrow Mata Nui's authority. Teridax infected Mata Nui with a powerful virus that slowly weakened the Great Spirit over centuries. As the virus took hold, Mata Nui manipulated future events to ensure that heroic figures would rise to defend him, even as the robot’s systems faltered. Eventually, Mata Nui fell into a coma and his robotic body malfunctioned, leading to a catastrophic plummet toward the ocean world of Aqua Magna, an event later known as the Great Cataclysm.
In the aftermath of Mata Nui’s coma, various groups of heroes—including the Toa Nuva and Toa Mahri—arose in an effort to revive him using the legendary Kanohi Ignika, the Mask of Life. These quests took them across the fractured parts of his universe, often at great cost. Ultimately, Mata Nui’s body was briefly revived but claimed by Teridax, whose spirit now controlled it. Teridax expelled Mata Nui’s spirit and the Mask of Life into space to prevent his return. Though weakened and cast adrift, Mata Nui vowed to come back.
Mata Nui’s spirit and the Ignika eventually crash-landed on the desert planet of Bara Magna. There, the mask’s power created a new physical body for him. In this humble, Toa-like form, he awoke and soon encountered the native inhabitants of Bara Magna, including a small Scarabax beetle he named Click. Mata Nui adapted to this new world, forging friendships with the Glatorian and Agori, and learning of their struggles. Over time, he used the power of the Ignika to assist his allies and help unite scattered villages against common threats.
As Mata Nui’s influence grew among the peoples of Bara Magna, he began trying to proceed with his original mission. Eventually, he took control of an ancient prototype robot, using its power to combat Teridax directly when he arrived in Mata Nui’s original robotic body. In a titanic confrontation, Mata Nui defeated Teridax, then used his remaining strength to restore the shattered Spherus Magna to its original unified state. With his mission complete and his enemies defeated, Mata Nui’s spirit returned to the Ignika and withdrew, encouraging his allies to begin new lives on the renewed world.
Mata Nui’s abilities were defined by his role as the Great Spirit and overseer of the Matoran Universe. While in control of his colossal body, he was responsible for providing and regulating light, heat, gravity, and other essential environmental forces throughout the internal universe, essentially acting as its life-support system. He also was able to create new sapient species (such as the Makuta and others) to populate and manage the Matoran Universe.
Mata Nui's robot body was equipped with a camouflage system that engaged whenever he landed on a world to observe it, such as when Mata Nui crash-landed on Aqua Magna, his camouflage system created the island of Mata Nui. The robot could also project lasers and gravity beams as part of its functional systems (or for self defense), as well as teleport beings around and outside itself within a long range. It was also capable of flight, primarily utilizing the Red Star as a propulsion system to travel and observe the cosmos.
Mata Nui's personality is defined by his sense of duty and responsibility, consistently prioritizing the survival and stability of the Matoran Universe. He fulfilled his duty, but was emotionally detached and often ignored major events, which contributed to Teridax overthrowing him. After his exile, he sought to correct his failures by defeating Teridax and freeing his people. He also showed genuine compassion for the people of Bara Magna, even risking his life to save others directly. Once he succeeded, he realized his people had grown beyond needing a Great Spirit ruler and chose not to interfere with the new society on Spherus Magna, going dormant in the Mask of Life.

Mata Nui uses the theme 'Our Hisoutensoku' which originates from the Touhou Project series as a pre-battle theme. It is often attributed as the theme for the giant robot Hisoutensoku.
