Matoro was created along with thousands of other Matoran by the Great Beings to populate the planet of Luna Magna. However, the Mining War broke out over the planet, which almost every Matoran participated in.
The war ended after the Kingdom of Luna Magna was established. Due to how common Ko-Matoran where among the population, Matoro was chosen as one of many hundreds of Matoran to become a miner. Soon, organized mining efforts began in a centralized area, and the Great Mine of Luna Magna was started.
Matoro worked diligently as a miner for many years, making friends with Knoxus, a fellow Matoran Miner, along the way.
Matoro went on to witness the Dimensional Relocation of Luna Magna - an incident where a dimensional rift opened in the sky and pulled the planet into the Prime Universe. Shortly after this event, a rogue Makuta appeared on Luna Magna, and tried to kill Knoxus. Matoro defended him as best he could, but they where soon rescued by Chilluno. Soon, Mata Nui noticed the Makuta on Luna Magna and decided to rescue Matoro and Knoxus. However, knowing that the Luna Magnans would never allow him near the planet again, he decided to take the two Matoran for study instead.
Matoro's memories were wiped, his armor was changed and body was rebuilt, and he was eventually placed among the Ko-Matoran of Ko-Metru during the Time Slip. While studying Matoro, Mata Nui grew especially fond of the him, knowing he was meant for greatness.
When Gringat learned of the disappearance of Matoro and Knoxus, he vilified Mata Nui, and erected a memorial for the two Matoran, who became honored as the 'Lost Ones' by the Luna Magnans.
Matoro would later go on to become Turaga Nuju's interpreter, the Toa Inika of Ice, and finally, the Toa Mahri of Ice, where he donned the Kanohi Ignika to save Mata Nui at the cost of his own life.
Being a miner, Matoro could typically be found wielding a standard pickaxe.
As a Matoran, Matoro had very limited control over Ice. Like all Luna Magnans, he had the inherent ability to control Moonlight Elemental Energy, but it remained locked for his entire life up until his sacrifice, in which all of his internal Moonlight Elemental energy was released in the form of a huge flash in Karda Nui.
Matoro wore a Kanohi Akaku, the Great Mask of X-Ray Vision, which he was unable to use as a Matoran.
Matoro was quiet, but friendly to others, and very protective of his friends. His helpful nature made him quite popular among his fellow miners.
Matoro's theme is 'Paradise ~ Deep Mountain,' which originates from the Touhou Project series as the theme for Letty Whiterock.
