Guardian of the Mask of Life

Backstory

Brutaka was a soldier for the Brotherhood of Makuta until he grew weary of that lifestyle and left. He was then recruited into the Order of Mata Nui. Eventually, Brutaka was tasked with protecting the Mask of Life near the Village of Voya Nui, along with his friend, Axonn. He was placed on this assignment before the Order's Divisions were formed, and therefore isn't an official member of any division.

After the Great Cataclysm, Brutaka's loyalty to Mata Nui was shaken, believing the Great Spirit betrayed them. Axonn convinced him to continue his duties, believing that the Great Spirit had been cast into a slumber, and that he would one day reawaken to restore order to the universe.

1,000 years later, the Piraka, Toa Nuva, and Toa Inika arrived on the Island of Voya Nui, seeking the Mask of Life. Now convinced that serving Mata Nui was a lost cause, Brutaka betrayed Axonn, and assisted the Piraka against the Toa.

Brutaka and Axonn fought, and Axonn was eventually able to defeat him. He summoned Botar to take Brutaka to the Pit, but vowed to one day rescue his friend.

While in the Pit, Brutaka found himself mutated by the waters and unable to breathe air. He attempted to ally with the Barraki, but was betrayed by them. After battling for the Mask of Life under the ocean of Aqua Magna, Brutaka was rescued by the Order of Mata Nui and given a breathing helmet to exist above water.

Helryx gave Brutaka a chance to redeem himself by sending him on a mission to rescue the imprisoned Makuta Miserix along with several Order prisoners. Brutaka successfully completed this mission and returned to Daxia, redeemed.

After reuniting with Axonn, the two went on to recruit the Skakdi of Zakaz to the Order's side of the upcoming war against the Brotherhood of Makuta. They then located the site of the Makuta's creation, a pool of Antidermis hidden on one of the Southern Islands. Brutaka and Axonn fell into the pool, but Brutaka absorbed a large amount of the essence, increasing his strength. Brutaka rescued Axonn from the pool, and teleported them both to the Core Processor.

Once inside the Core Processor, they discovered Helryx, Miserix, Keetongu, and the Toa Hagah. When Brutaka revealed they were within the mind of Mata Nui, Makuta Teridax revealed he was already inside, and destroyed Brutaka's mask.

Teridax teleported Brutaka and Axonn out of the Core Processor, but they made their way back. When they arrived again, they found Helryx, Miserix, Tren Krom (In Lewa's Body), Tuyet, Hafu, and Kapura. The group split up into separate sides, and began to fight over whether or not to destroy the Core Processor, until Artakha arrived to break up the fighting. Teridax then teleported all the beings into space.

The group was rescued from space by Vezon, and they found themselves in an abandoned fortress on the moon of Bota Magna. There they discovered Tomidas, an imprisoned Great Being who was cursed by the Mask of Life, and debated whether to free him. Lewa, Hafu and Kapura left the fortress.

While in the fortress, Mata Nui managed to defeat Teridax and reunite Spherus Magna, transforming the moon of Bota Magna into the forest of Bota Magna. This process reversed the effects of the Pit and the pool of Antidermis on Brutaka.

Unbeknownst to the beings within the fortress, another Great Being, Velika, was rigging the fortress to explode, intending to wipe out many of the most powerful beings from the Matoran Universe. Velika's explosives went off, killing Brutaka and Axonn. Tomidas survived, but remained imprisoned, and Helryx was rescued by Artakha, who revealed himself to be a Great Being in disguise. Miserix, Tuyet, and Vezon's fates are currently unknown.
