Backstory

The Dimensional Relocation of Luna Magna was an incident started by Karzahni that caused a dimensional rift to be opened in space, which pulled the planet Luna Magna and thousands of powerful artifacts into the Prime Universe. The Order of Mata Nui came to Mata Nui's aid during this incident, and assisted in collecting and hiding the many artifacts displaced by the rift

During the Dimensional Relocation of Luna Magna, Helryx was struck by a blast from an alternate-universe Spear of Fusion carried by the Vezon and Fenrakk from that universe. This separated the light and shadow aspects of Helryx's spirit into two separate beings - Helryx and Xyrleh. Due to the small amount of shadow in Helryx's spirit, Xyrleh was on the verge of death. However, she stayed conscious long enough to witness Shelok kill the alternate-universe Vezon and Fenrakk using Lævateinn, the Sword of Destruction. Helryx rescued the sickly Xyrleh after the incident, unaware of her true nature, and began nursing her back to health.

As Xyrleh recovered, she traveled alongside the Toa Artakha as they hid several of the powerful artifacts around the Matoran Universe.

After gaining enough strength, Xyrleh attacked and killed Khafu, which led Helryx to abandon her in the wild. Xyrleh survived thanks to the life energy absorbed from Khafu, and went on to wander the Matoran Universe, randomly attacking and absorbing life force from various beings and Rahi.

In time, Xyrleh absorbed enough life force to grow to her full size, which resembled a mutated, disfigured Helryx with a large pair of wings. As word of her attacks spread, she came to be known as Flandrex, which translates to 'Scarlet Devil' in the Matoran language.

Flandrex would eventually find her way to the Island of the Lotus Clan, where she had witnessed the hiding of the Sword of Destruction. She recovered the artifact, and tested it on a curious Le-Matoran named Konpaku, killing him. Shortly after the Toa Artakha arrived and captured her.

Flandrex was imprisoned beneath the remnants of the disbanded Hand of Artakha's headquarters, as the Order of Mata Nui's headquarters on Daxia was not yet complete. She remained there for years, guarded closely by former members of the Hand of Artakha, who tortured and abused her, and cut off her wings.

Eventually the Order of Mata Nui headquarters on Daxia was completed, and Flandrex was to be transported to the new location. As Flandrex was moved to a mobile prison cell, she escaped, and slaughtered her prison guards. From their weapons and the wreckage of the transport, she crafted crude prosthetic wings, and grafted them onto her back. She also recovered a Kanohi Crast from one of the fallen guards.

Flandrex then searched the abandoned Hand of Artakha headquarters, and found a vault where many of the artifacts from the Dimensional Relocation of Luna Magna were secured, including the Sword of Destruction. She recovered the sword, and used its power to completely destroy the artifact vault and what was left of the Hand of Artakha headquarters.

In response to her escape, Helryx sent a massive force to recapture Flandrex. The resulting battle led to catastrophic losses for the Order of Mata Nui. Flandrex was successfully recaptured, but the Order was so weakened by the battle that Helryx was forced to begin recruiting Toa and Matoran to rapidly restore the Order's strength.

Flandrex was imprisoned again on Daxia in a much more secure cell, and remains there to this day.

Abilities & Tools

Flandrex is the polar opposite to Helryx, as a result of being created from the shadow in her spirit. Because of this, Flandrex's elemental ability is essentially the opposite of the elemental ability of Water. This new elemental ability was named 'Destruction' by the Order of Mata Nui.

As a Toa of Destruction, Flandrex can control expansion and compression. She can use this ability to force objects to implode, or expand particles to an unstable degree to cause explosions. This ability functions this way due to the fact that expansion and compression is resisted by water.

Toa of Water also posses healing abilities at the cost of their elemental power. Because of this, Flandrex has the ability to absorb life from a target to strengthen or heal herself.

Flandrex also wields Lævateinn, the Sword of Destruction, which she recovered from the island of the Lotus Clan. It is capable of projecting a burning mist from the blade, and is strong enough to level multiple city blocks in a single swing. This artifact was used by Shelok to kill the alternate-universe Vezon and Fenrakk that originally separated Flandrex from Helryx.

To replace her original wings, Flandrex created an artificial set using weapons from her prison guards and fragments of a prison transport. They are too heavy to be used for flight, but can be used to glide when paired with her Mask Power.

Flandrex wears a Kanohi Crast, the Great Mask of Repulsion, which was stolen from the corpse of an ex-Hand of Artakha agent she killed.

Personality

Flandrex is filled with hatred, and she will sometimes kill things for no reason at all. She enjoys toying with her victims, and will drag out their suffering as long as possible for her own amusement.

Her prolonged imprisonment and evil nature has led Flandrex to become completely insane. She behaves with extreme disrespect and prejudice toward members of the Order, especially Helryx, and is known to respond with sarcasm during interrogations.

Trivia

Flandrex is directly inspired by Flandre Scarlet, a character from the Touhou Project series. Her name and character design where based directly on Flandre. Flandrex also shares Flandre’s theme, 'U.N. Owen was Her?
